MFD responds to two structure fires early Monday morning

In the early morning hours Monday, the Marshalltown Fire Department responded to two structure fires.

According to a press release, the MFD was dispatched to 212 N. 3rd Ave. at 12:21 a.m. for a detached garage fire at the rear of the property. Upon arrival, fire department members found a small two-stall detached garage fully engulfed in flames.

Before the fire department had arrived, the structure had collapsed. Firefighters extinguished the rubble pile without incident. According to the occupants of the residence, the garage was locked with no contents inside, and the building had no electrical service connections. The fire was reported by multiple passersby. Firefighters were at the scene of this incident for about an hour, and the cause is under investigation.

Just over three hours later, the MFD was dispatched to the second fire of the morning at 504 W. Linn Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a working fire in the residence that was brought under control quickly with two hose lines.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire and originated in the kitchen area. Neighbors reported that the tenants of the house had moved, and it was unoccupied. There were no injuries, and firefighters were at the scene of this incident for approximately an hour. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
