Historical Society of Marshall County receives $5,000 grant

The Historical Society of Marshall County (HSMC) announced Wednesday it had received a $5,000 Cultural Capacity Building Grant from the Iowa Arts Council.

“The grant will allow HSMC to fund staff and related organizational expenses,” said president Dan Brandt of Marshalltown. “We are grateful the state legislature funded this program, and also appreciative for this grant bening awarded to us for the second consecutive year.”

HSMC is a IRS-certified 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization managed by an all-volunteer board of directors. Part-time museum/library assistant Dorie Tammen of Marshalltown is the organization’s only paid employee.

Established in 1908, the HSMC’s mission is to preserve and protect the county’s valuable historical archives at its headquarters — The Mowry-Irvine Mansion — located at 503 W. Main St. in Marshalltown. The mansion is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

HSMC sponsors monthly “HIstory on Second Tuesday” events at the mansion as well as maintaining the historical Taylor School No. 4. Additionally, it works in partnership with the Susie Sower House trustees in making that historical home available for tours.

HSMC — in partnership with the state of Iowa — maintains and staffs the iconic Edel Blacksmith Shop in Haverhill from Memorial Day through Labor Day,
