T-R PHOTOS BY JAKE RYDER/VIGGO MORTENSEN PHOTO BY WENDY WITT OF MESKWAKI MEDIA — The 108th Annual Meskwaki Powwow finished on Sunday at the Powwow Grounds located on the Settlement about four miles west of Tama, and by most metrics, it was one of the biggest powwows in the tribe’s history. The four-day event celebrated various groups throughout the weekend, including a Veterans’ Day program on Saturday. Attendees came from all corners of Iowa and beyond, including Oscar-nominated actor Viggo Mortensen, actor John Gibbs of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Reservation Dogs” and “Longmire,” members of the Sac and Fox tribe from Oklahoma, and a Hawai’i delegation that provided a cultural exchange with local dances, rituals and a fireknife performance. Visitors also enjoyed food and goods from multiple local vendors in addition to enjoying the daily Powwow programs in the main arena that featured dancing, singing and recognition of tribe royalty. Meskwaki Media Director Shannon Mitchell reported that the powwow’s livestream had been seen by well over 300,000 viewers, and an announcer said the streams had been viewed in 82 countries.
