House fire on Summit Street deemed ‘suspicious,’ investigation ongoing
The Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD) was dispatched to a blaze that has since been deemed suspicious on Summit Street Saturday afternoon.
At 2:30 p.m., the MFD was dispatched to 1501 Summit St. for a possible house fire, according to a press release. Upon arrival, a two-story house was found with a working fire inside of it. When firefighters entered the house, they found two separate and unrelated fires, one in the basement and one in a first-floor bathroom. Both fires were extinguished without incident.
The resident of the house reported the fire to 911 dispatch and was able to escape the fire with her dog prior to the arrival of the fire department, and the American Red Cross is providing support to the victim.
Following his investigation, MFD Fire Marshal Josh Warnell has classified the fire as suspicious, and the Marshalltown Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation into the matter. During the course of the response to the fire, an unrelated arrest was made on an out-of-county warrant.
The MPD, UnityPoint Health Marshalltown EMS, and Alliant Energy all assisted at the scene.
