A list of Halloween happenings around the area

It’s that time of year again, and the Times-Republican has a list of special Halloween themed events from around the coverage area. Please note that this does not include each city’s regular trick or treat night, which will be published at a later date. If there are any we missed, please email them to news@timesrepublican.com.

Oct. 18

• Fall Flannel Run featuring businesses in Marshalltown and Grundy Center. October 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and October 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pick up a punch card at any of the participating businesses. Get your card punched at each stop (no purchase necessary at every location). Turn in your completed punch card at the end for a chance to win a swag bag full of goodies.

Oct. 19

• From October 19-25 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Marshalltown Walmart is hosting a Trick or Treat scavenger search customer appreciation event throughout the store. Find hint sheets up front at customer service or from the door hosts. Figure out the clues and candy is yours. Free for all ages.

• Little Tykes Halloween Party at Treyton’s Place will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., 324 Marietta St., Rhodes. For ages 5 and under.

• St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Arts@StPaul’s will present its second annual Fall Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a celebration of pets, music, food and fun. Hosted in conjunction with the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown, Father Richard Graves will hold a Blessing of the Animals on the hour from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the churchyard, in honor of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Bring your dogs or cats, hamster, birds, gerbils. etc. Live music will be provided by Party of 2: Nikki & Derek. Maria’s Tacos will be on hard. The playground will be open. Bring a lawn chair. Baked goods will be on hand and drinks will be available. Games for kids and adults.

• The Rhodes Fall Festival returns for the second year in a row, from noon to 6 p.m. There will be food vendors, kids’ games and activities, a petting zoo, animal poo Bingo, horseshoe tournament, trail ride and new this year, a pie baking competition.

• Head out to Tama for the Halloween fun trick or treat trail, soup supper, and haunted hayride. Trick or treat trail at the high school parking lot will run 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. At the Tama Civic Center enjoy a soup supper, freewill donation, starting at 5 p.m. Then from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. take a haunted hayride at the Tama Civic Center/Cherry Lake. Sponsored by the City of Tama Emergency Services, the STC Student Council and the Tama-Toledo Chamber of Commerce.

• The zombies will return to the Grimes Farm and Conservation Center, 2349 233rd St. Join fellow runners and walkers during the Park Apocalypse 5k run/walk as you avoid getting your brains eaten by the zombies. Put on your running shoes for this spine-tingling 5K, with registration beginning at 6 p.m. and a staggered race start beginning at 6:30 p.m. Runners will brave the oncoming night and undead creatures lurking the trails, which will try to steal their brains (also known as flags, from the flag football belts). If runners cross the finish line with flags, they have avoided lively decompositions and are declared a survivor. Those with no flags – their future is not guaranteed, and they are deemed infected. Runners can register online at Eventbrite.

Oct. 20

• The Wieting Theatre in Toledo will be screening “The Nightmare Before Christmas” on October 18 at 7 p.m., October 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Oct. 22

• Gutekunst Public Library “Room on the Broom” for children of all ages, 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the library. “Room on the Broom” is a delightful children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. We will read the story first. Boys and girls then may “craft” a very tall hat, create their own “glowing” wand, fold a black cat bookmark, and finally craft their own mummy juice boxes, cookie/candy witch hats, and broom sticks. The adventure will be continued at home with “take and make” kits.

• Haunted Hallways trick or treating at Glenwood Place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Oct. 23

• The Marshalltown Public Library will host Storytime: Funny Monster Stories at 10:30 a.m. Get into a Halloween-y mood with some funny monster stories, just right for little ones.

• Children are welcome to attend Melbourne Public Library’s Halloween party starting at 6 p.m. Held in its basement, 603 Main St., there will be a costume contest with trophies, snacks, drinks, games, creepy sensory boxes and more.

Oct. 24

• The ARL of Marshalltown will offer its yearly Haunted Shelter and Trunk or Treat at its shelter, 1921 Taylor Avenue, starting at 6:30 p.m., there will be trunk or treat, followed by a haunted trail at 7:30 p.m., geared for youth. October 25 will be the scary night for adults, starting at 6:30 p.m. with activities and snacks prior to the haunted trail. Volunteers are needed to help with the event and set up trunk or treat spots. There will also be a virtual dog costume contest the week of Halloween.

• Marshalltown Central Business District’s Haunt the Block trick or treat event in downtown Marshalltown from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. View the map here: www.marshalltownmainstreet.org/haunt-the-block.html.

• The Albion Municipal Library, 400 N. Main St, will host its second annual Halloween Trivia Night from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Enjoy prizes, food and drinks. Register at alblibrary22@gmail.com or call 641-488-2266 to reserve a space for a team of three to four.

• Marshalltown Community College’s Pumpkin Jamboree will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Student Activity Center. Enjoy Trick-or-treating, Halloween Carnival Games, Pumpkin Decorating, Creepy Crawlers Animals & Insects, Photo Scenes, Inflatables, BINGO, Spooky Storyteller, Haunted Hall, Glow Tunnel. Enter at the South Entrance to the college by the District Office Building and start in the Student Activity Center on the MCC Campus. Guests are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the MCC Food Pantry.

Oct. 25

• Trick or treat at Primary Health Care (PHC), 101 Iowa Avenue West, Suite 102, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Oct. 26

• Fifth Annual Harvest Festival Vendor & Craft Show at Veterans Memorial Coliseum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Halloween Party for kids from noon to 2 p.m. at the Albion Municipal Library.

• Head out to the Marshalltown Speedway for the Trailer Trick o’ Treating for the young race fans from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Kids will get to come to the pits, see the cars and take home some treats from the racers. There will be a $100 cash prize to the best-decorated pit during Trick o’ Treating.

• Scooters trunk or treat from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

• Tama County 911 Communications will be hosting the Second Annual Trunk or Treat with the Heroes at the Toledo Heights Park from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

• Festival Fundraiser Ham Ball Dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. or until sold out, at the Albion Fire Station. Meal comes with ham roll, cheesy hash browns, green beans, brownie, roll and drink. Dine in, carry out and pre-order /pre-pay options available.

• Game Haven’s BYOB night/Halloween contest will start at 8 p.m. Please bring your own cups. No alcohol will be sold on the premises. Enjoy board games, game consoles and beer pong. 21 and over only. A fee of $10 at the door covers your day pass.

• Journey Church, 700 E. Olive St., will host its annual trunk or treat from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will include an obstacle course, a bouncy castle, mega slide, food trucks and loads of candy.

Oct. 28

• Geocaching for Candy. Families will learn how to use handheld GPS units, and then using coordinates will search Grimes Farm for hidden candy from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Grimes Farm Shelter House. Registration Fee: $10 per group. Deadline to register and pay fee: October 23 by 4 p.m. Bring a bag for your finds and feel free to dress up.

Oct. 29

• Southridge Specialty Care, 309 West Merle Hibbs Blvd., will host trick or treat from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be cookies, punch, candy, Halloween tattoos and crafts.

Oct. 30

• The Marshalltown Public Library will host its fan favorite Trick or Treat Storytime and Costume Parade at 10:30 a.m.

• Trick or treating at Accura HealthCare, 2401 S. Second St., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The residents and staff invite you to a fun-filled night of trick-or-treating inside the community.

Oct. 31

• Harmony Marshalltown, 910 E. Olive St., will host a trunk or treat from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants can set up their trunks from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Nov. 2

• Halloween Party at TC’s Pub, 921 N. 3rd Ave., starting at 8 p.m. Drink specials and DJ Scoob will be spinning the tunes. Costume contest at Midnight.
