Lasley double murder trial continued, new date yet to be determined

Lasley

The Ilias Lasley trial tentatively set for Monday has been continued.

Due to the anticipated length of the trial and the numerous parties involved, the state and Lasley’s defense attorneys, David Newkirk and Christine Branstad, requested a trial scheduling conference, which is set for Tuesday. The conference will be used to determine a new trial start date.

Lasley, 29, of Ankeny, is charged with the first-degree murders of Mario Murillo, 28 and Frances Tillie Gasca, 33, both of Marshalltown. The charges stem from an April 19, 2024 shooting at a residence north of Marshalltown.

The arrest report states Lasley arrived at the residence and became upset about Murillo and Gasca speaking to each other in Spanish. He allegedly followed them outside and began shooting.

Lasley is also charged with two counts of control of a firearm by a felon, which is a class D felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $7,500 fine. First-degree murder is a class A felony in Iowa, and carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Starting at $4.38/week.
