MFD battles early morning blaze on Union Street

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a blaze at 402 Union St. early on Wednesday morning. No one was injured.

At approximately 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, the Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched to 402 Union St. for a residential fire assignment. Upon arrival a single family, 1 ½ story house is found with a working fire in the finished attic space.

At the time of the fire, the house was occupied by six adults who escaped from the building uninjured. There were no working smoke detectors in the house.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes of arrival. According to the property owner, the house is supposed to be vacant.

The fire originated in a closet on the upper floor, and the cause is under investigation. Those displaced are being cared for by friends and the American Red Cross.

The Marshalltown Police Department and Alliant Energy (Gas and Electric) assisted at the scene. The structure will be boarded and secured by Servicemaster by Rice.
