Marshalltown man charged with attempted murder, robbery after high speed chase

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO — A high speed chase that went from Marshalltown to Ferguson and then back to Marshalltown ended in the parking lot of Calvin Rockett on Wednesday night, where a vehicle allegedly stolen by suspect Antonio Lizarde crashed into the Last Ride food truck outside of the temporarily closed restaurant.

A Marshalltown man is facing a litany of charges including first degree robbery and attempted murder after allegedly robbing a residence on West Main Street, assaulting a victim and stealing their vehicle on Wednesday evening before leading a high speed chase that ended in the parking lot of Calvin Rockett when he crashed into a food truck.

At approximately 7:50 p.m., officers from the Marshalltown Police Department (MPD) responded to the 600 block of West Main Street for a report of a robbery that had just occurred, according to a press release issued Thursday morning. The victim of the robbery had been assaulted and their vehicle stolen. After stealing the vehicle, the suspect attempted to run the victim over, but the victim was able to get out of the way. The victim sustained minor injuries from the assault.

A few minutes later, the stolen vehicle was captured on the FLOCK camera system, and officers were subsequently able to locate the vehicle on 3rd Avenue near Main Street. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled.

With the assistance of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, a vehicle pursuit ensued and continued south out of Marshalltown and into Ferguson, where the pursuit continued west to Highway 14 and then back north into Marshalltown.

Officers utilized stop sticks as the fleeing vehicle entered Marshalltown. The driver continued north into Marshalltown until he subsequently wrecked in a parking lot at Center Street and Westwood before being taken into custody. In the latest unfortunate twist for Calvin Rockett/Flying Elbow Owner Garrett Goodman, photos shared with the T-R indicate that the suspect hit Goodman’s Last Ride food truck outside of Calvin Rockett, a restaurant that has been closed for over a year due to a severe pipe break.

The driver, 33-year-old Antonio Lizarde of Marshalltown, was charged with first degree robbery and attempted murder (both Class B felonies), eluding (a Class D felony), driving while barred (an aggravated misdemeanor), OWI — first offense and interference with official acts causing injury, both serious misdemeanors.

As of Thursday morning, Lizarde was being held in the Marshall County Jail with bond set at $25,000 each on the attempted murder and robbery charges as well as smaller bonds on numerous other charges. Hearing and trial dates have not yet been set.

Starting at $4.38/week.
