A Marshalltown man was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of first degree arson over allegations that he started fires at the Super 8 on South Center Street last fall and at a residence on Union Street earlier this year.
On Oct. 24, 2024, the Marshalltown Police Department and the Marshalltown Fire Department started an investigation into a suspicious fire at the Marshalltown Super 8, according to a press release issued by the MPD. A suspect was identified in that fire, and the investigation continued. Then, on Feb. 27 of this year, the MPD and MFD responded to another suspicious fire at 402 Union St. in Marshalltown. The same suspect, 22-year-old Anthony Ivan Garcia of Marshalltown, was identified in connection with both fires.
On Thursday, Garcia was arrested and taken into custody on two counts of first degree arson, both Class B felonies. Trial and hearing dates have not yet been set.
