Unity in Our Community hosting additional event at MACC

The Unity in Our Community committee is bringing a new event on Saturday — the Unity in Our Community Car Show.
Unlike the September event at the Marshalltown Arts and Civic Center, there is no carnival in conjunction with the car show. Unity member Lanette Martin said committee members wanted to do something separate from the carnival event.
The committee is accepting all motor vehicle and motorcycle entries for the car show.
“We’re kind of new at this car show thing, but also know that car shows are a very popular summer event for people who do own classic vehicles and such,” she said.
Martin said there are no particular rules to be followed. Free-will donations are asked for the entry fees. Car enthusiasts can register their entries the day of the event or beforehand by sending an email to unityinourcommunity23@gmail.com.
“The money from this car show will go to Unity in Our Community for future efforts,” she said.
The next Unity event is the annual carnival scheduled for Aug. 2. Martin said they are still working on the details of that event. Last year, the Because We Care carnival consisted of bouncy houses, games, food trucks and a car show. All proceeds were used to purchase supplies for school buildings for Marshalltown Community School District, St. Francis and Marshalltown Christian School. The supplies included items such as shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products and more for students who did not have them at home.
Unity in Our Community was started by four Marshalltown churches to help meet needs of the town.
“I think we are still in a growing stage,” Martin said. “We always welcome any volunteers that would like to help at our events. And we’re just trying to research different areas of funding and grants.”
She added they would love to see more people in Marshalltown help Unity with events or spread the word about their purpose. Martin said people can call or text her at 641-351-2362 or email at unityinourcommunity23@gmail.com.
