Glenwood Place prepares ‘Senior Summer Series’ of free public events

T-R FILE PHOTO The “Cruise for a Cause” Classic Car Show is already an annual tradition at Glenwood Place, and this year, the senior living facility is adding a host of other free public events throughout the summer.
Glenwood Place Community Relations Coordinator Brooke Davis wants the facility located at 2907 S. 6th St. to be more than just a place to live, but a place for people from all around the area to gather and enjoy each other’s company.
Glenwood has already hosted the annual “Cruise for a Cause” Classic Car Show for the last several years, but they’re expanding the slate of activities with a slew of events dubbed “The Senior Summer Series” beginning with live music from Ronnie Burgess on June 11 at 6 p.m. The Cruise for a Cause is slated for June 19 at 5 p.m., followed by bingo on July 9 at 3 p.m., live music from Birdy Young on July 22 at 1 p.m., music bingo on Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. and an ice cream social on Aug. 20 at 3 p.m.
Davis explained that affiliated Jaybird Senior Living communities in other Iowa towns have become hubs for social interaction, and she didn’t see any reason why something similar couldn’t work in Marshalltown.
“Ronnie Burgess, Birdy Young, those are entertainers we have for our residents already, so like, why wouldn’t we move it outside for the summer and piggyback off of what Marshalltown already has a good turnout with?” she asked. “So we’re inviting people to join us. Obviously, they’ll need to bring their own lawn chairs, but we’ll have snacks, popcorn for people, drinks for people. And then the goal is that we kind of establish relationships with people, they’ll keep coming back and we’ll cap the summer with an ice cream social, which we’re gonna try to host in our courtyard so people can see different aspects of the community.”
She hopes the events will be well-received and provide another outlet for local seniors — and all other residents, too — to participate in free and fun activities. For more information, call 641-752-8410 or visit the Glenwood Place Facebook page.
