A well-known local veteran, businessman and Rotarian received a special recognition on Tuesday as Mayor Joel Greer proclaimed June 24 “Marshalltown’s Vic Hellberg Day.” Hellberg said the declaration coincided with the changing of the guard in Rotary after he was recently presented a plaque for 50 years of perfect attendance as a member of the service club and has also previously received the Kenneth Brintnall Memorial Award. Vic, along with his wife Gayle, is the fourth generation owner of Hellberg’s Jewelers at 13 W. Main St., and he has been actively involved with the Iowa Jewelers Association board and the Jewelers of America National Board. Hellberg, a Navy veteran, also served 22 years as a Marshall County Veterans Affairs commissioner, is a past commander of American Legion Post 46 and played key roles in fundraising efforts for the Vietnam War Memorial at the Iowa Veterans Home and the restoration of the Veterans Memorial Coliseum after the tornado.
