Canada geese round up and leg banding
T-R PHOTOS BY GARRY BRANDENBURG – Tony Brink and his grandsons enjoyed a Canada goose roundup and leg banding Wednesday, July 2. A crew from the Iowa River Corridor Wildlife unit of the Iowa DNR came to Tony’s farm. They were successful in capturing 42 geese. One mature goose already had a leg band. It was determined that banding took place in 2021 at Rock Creek State Park vicinity in Jasper County. Young of the year Canada geese are big enough to hold a leg band. Banding at this time of the year is accomplished because the birds are not able to fly. While on the water they were directed toward a capture pen by a radio controlled boat. Once a lead goose walked into the pen, all of the remaining gaggle followed the leader.
