Former Marshalltown tattoo artist faces assault with intent to commit sexual abuse charge

Cates

A former tattoo artist in Marshalltown is facing a charge similar to multiple allegations against him in Polk County.

Mark Cates, 27, of Ames, was arrested on Monday for assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Marshalltown Police Department (MPD) Captain Sadie Weekley said the incident occurred on Nov. 8, 2024 at Cates’ former place of employment, the Ink Factory on South Center Street. She said he is no longer working at the Ink Factory, and his employment was terminated after the owner found out about the alleged incident.

Weekley said the incident is similar to charges Cates is facing in Polk County. The Clive Police Department arrested him after several sexual assault allegations were made, allegedly occuring at Cates’ place of employment, Lucky Gal Tattoo and Piercing.

He is facing charges from two incidents that allegedly occurred May 15 and May 21. It is alleged Cates took the victims to a back room to measure areas of the skin for tattoos. Some of the victims’ clothing were removed, and Cates made lewd comments and touched parts of their bodies while having a visible erection.

“What happened here is similar to the other victims getting tattooed at his place of business who were assaulted at the time,” Weekley said.

She added that Cates was released on bond and is not in custody at this time.

The MPD began investigating the allegations on June 10, but Weekley is concerned there might be additional victims.

“We are willing to talk to anybody else,” she said. “I believe he had six different victims in Polk, and is charged for two incidents. He has one in Marshalltown. I would not be surprised if there are more.”

Weekley urged any possible victims of Cates to contact the MPD and talk to her or another officer, 641-754-5725.

Starting at $4.38/week.
