Supervisors hear from drainage engineers during brief meeting

T-R PHOTO BY ROBERT MAHARRY — Tyler Buman and Jacob Hagan of AgriVia Drainage District Engineering Services address the Marshall County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday morning.

Wednesday morning’s regular Marshall County Board of Supervisors meeting clocked in at under 15 minutes as they heard briefly from Tyler Buman and Jacob Hagan with AgriVia Drainage District Engineering Services and otherwise moved quickly through the agenda with minimal discussion.

Hagan explained that their company is a new start-up that launched at the end of April and is focused on agricultural drainage services, a field in which they both have previous experience.

“We felt there was a marketplace for a smaller, leaner operation, low overhead. We handed out our rate sheet there. We feel our rate sheet reflects that,” he said.

Buman added that both he and Hagan come from farming backgrounds — Hagan hails from Bayard, Buman from Harlan — and while acknowledging that Marshall County doesn’t have a large number of drainage districts compared to others, they’d love the opportunity to work with the county in the future. With a small, hyper focused operation, they stressed the ability to provide lower cost services and know projects “like the back of their hands.”

Supervisor Kevin Goodman asked about bulldozer work and tiling, and the presenters clarified that they only perform engineering services and put the actual physical labor out to bids while managing the awarding of a contract. County Auditor/Recorder Nan Benson said Marshall County has some shared drainage districts with Story County, and Buman and Hagan said they would soon be attending a supervisors meeting there to present on the same topic.

“Administratively, we’re very happy that we have a limited amount of drainage districts here. There are other counties that have huge amounts, but it’s really great to know that there’s guys like you out there that can assist us when the time arises of, like you said, repairs or if there’s a new one,” Supervisor Jarret Heil said.

Buman offered to assist farmers who had any questions about drainage and encouraged them to call or email AgriVia.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the consent agenda as listed.

• Approved the EideBailly engagement agreement and authorized the chair to sign.

• Approved the Marshall County actuarial services agreement with HUB International Great Plains through Dec. 31, 2028.

Starting at $4.38/week.
