Tama man killed in officer-involved shooting identified
Tama County Attorney Brent Heeren and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have confirmed that 19-year-old Logan Kurth was the man shot and killed by police in the early hours of July 5.
According to an updated press release issued by the DCI Tuesday, Kurth died from multiple gunshot wounds he sustained after walking towards officers with a raised firearm. The officer involved in the incident has been interviewed and remains on critical incident leave pending a review by the Iowa Attorney General’s Office and the Tama County Attorney’s Office.
Kurth was a 2024 graduate of South Tama County High School and the son of STC school board member Megan Thiessen. On July 9, a memorial was posted to the district’s Facebook page.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with school board member Megan Thiessen and her family this week. STC teachers, staff, administration, and the board feel the loss of Logan. We hope you feel the love and support of your community and school district this week and beyond,” it read.
