Homemade chicken pot pies return for annual fundraiser

The popular flaky, golden pastry stuffed with chicken, veggies and gravy has returned to Marshalltown. The Assistance League of Marshalltown is taking orders for the annual chicken pot pie fundraiser.

Lindsay Kusserow, who is leading the publicity efforts for the Assistance League fundraiser, said people are usually excited about the return of the pot pies.

“Who doesn’t love a chicken pot pie?” she asked. “The Ladies of League were so excited to take on this fundraiser, and boy has it taken off.”

This year, 40 active Assistance League members will be making the savory pastries. Kusserow said a few past members like to get in on the action and are happy to help.

“Plus they are excellent educators on crimping,” she added, referring to the technique of sealing the edges of the top and bottom pie crusts together and making them aesthetically pleasing.

Fortunately for pie fans, Kusserow said there is no limit as to how many they will make.

“Approximately 1,000 pies have been made each year, but we are chomping at the bit to make more and blow past numbers out of the water,” she said.

Fans of the League’s culinary wares can be assured the chicken pot pie has not changed.

“Our chicken pot pie recipe was perfected by multiple trial and errors,” Kusserow said. “It has been well received over the last two years and will remain the same.”

The First Presbyterian Church was gracious enough to allow the Assistance League to take over the kitchen and fellowship hall for pie prep and creating.

“All 10-inch pies will be made one day and all 6-inch minis will be created the following day,” Kusserow said.

The price of a chicken pot pie is another aspect that has not changed. It is $20, the same price during the last three years, she said. That amount will get a customer one 10-inch pie, or two 6-inch mini pies. The 6-inch option is new this year.

“Perfect for a college student or dinner for two,” she said.

Proceeds raised from the pie sales will be used to help Marshalltown people in need, as well as assist funding various projects which instill community pride.

“The Assistance League of Marshalltown is a community collaborator that supports growth, education, recreation, the arts and healthy living in Marshalltown and surrounding areas,” she said.
