T-R PHOTO BY ROBERT MAHARRY — The westbound lanes of Highway 30 near the 18th Avenue ramp were closed for an extended period of time on Wednesday due to a rollover crash. The Marshalltown Police Department received assistance from the Marshalltown Fire Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
The Marshalltown Police Department is investigating a rollover crash that occurred near the westbound entrance ramp of Highway 30 and 18th Avenue on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 1:24 p.m.
According to a press release, the westbound lanes were closed for “an extended period” pending the investigation, but they were eventually reopened later in the day. The MPD is being assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Marshalltown Fire Department.
On Thursday morning, the MPD confirmed that the crash resulted in a fatality and released more information about the circumstances. According to the subsequent release, a pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 30 when it approached a slow-moving truck pulling a gravity wagon. The pick-up truck lost control as it braked and tried to avoid the slow-moving truck and wagon, causing it to cross the median where it rolled and came to rest in the westbound lanes. The driver of the pick-up truck was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the pick-up truck and no other injuries reported as a result of the accident. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending further investigation.
“The Marshalltown Police Department sends its condolences to the family of the deceased,” it reads.
