Harvest Market to be held in 13th Street District Friday

It might not be technically fall yet, but the annual Harvest Market in the 13th Street District is the season’s unofficial kickoff. It returns Friday, Sept. 5 from 5 to 9 p.m.

More than 35 vendors will be selling their wares at the Makers Market from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., which will include fresh produce, baked goods and artisan products.

“This is our biggest vendor list we’ve ever hosted. We’re really excited. We always look at inviting back a lot of our staple vendors, but we’ve added some really cool new vendors this year as well,” said Christine Isom, who coordinates the Harvest Market along with Heidi Draisey. “It is primarily Central Iowa-based vendors, but we have a few that are a little bit further away.”

A vetting process ensures a wide selection of goods.

“That diversity of different products is what makes it unique and engaging for a wide cross section of the community to come and find something that they like, they enjoy, that they want to take home with them and introduce them to other local makers within our community and Central Iowa.”

The Kids’ Corner will feature a family photo booth, pumpkin decorating, tattoos, duck pond, and more, all free of charge, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. An ambulance from UnityPoint will be on hand as well.

“That’s a great way for the community, especially for kids, to see the inside of an ambulance. That will be in the same area as the Kids’ Corner,” she added.

There will be three stages: two acoustic and the West End Park Pavilion Stage.

“We have a north stage and a south stage on either end of 13th Street, and that runs at the same time as the Makers Market,” she said.

The night will kick off with “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the Scouts will present the colors, then sponsors will be recognized.

Brian Herrin will be on the north stage starting at 5:10 p.m. (between C Eye Care and Hermanson Orthodontics), followed by Denise Forney of 4neys at 6 p.m. with her kid-centered music. Then Jonah Seymour will perform from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The south stage, in front of the Chop Shop, will feature Buz Owen at 5:15 p.m., followed by Trevor Parrish starting at 6 p.m.

“It’s fun to see the diversity of the acoustic performers, the different styles of music that they have,” Isom said. “I think that really helps bring the market to life, and provides a really great backdrop for our kickoff to fall.”

The event’s headlining performer, Not Quite Brothers, will play from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the pavilion stage.

“We have been so blessed to have Pork Tornadoes join us the last several years, and so we’ve transitioned to Not Quite Brothers, which is equally renowned and has a huge following across the Midwest,” she said. “I know they perform at lots of different venues across the Midwest, so we’re hoping to have some out of town visitors that follow that band and join us in Marshalltown as well.”

Food trucks include Clare’s Tenderloins, Hotel Luna, Karam’s Mediterranean, Smokin’ G’s, Off the Griddle and Bell Bottom Mobile Café, plus beer and wine options.

Lillie Mae Chocolates, The Flying Elbow and Most Wanted Coffee will also be open.

“We also want to highlight the great businesses that we have down on 13th Street and make sure people patron those throughout the evening. Some are running specials,” Isom said.

The Iowa Veterans Home will offer a complementary shuttle service, which will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., available to both residents and the public. The shuttle will circle the West Malloy and Sheeler Parking lots and drop off at Summit and 13th Street.

There will be a moment of silence for the Iowa Veterans Home playing of “Taps” at 7:30 p.m.

Volunteers are still needed for greeting, cleanup, kids’ activities, helping with the bands, tending bar and more.

“Everything is coming together, but I am still in need of a few volunteers,” Draisey said.

“Need to edit a shift due to time constraints — just reach out to request this option and I can break up a shift in two if needed,” she said. “Please feel free to share with friends and family to join you. Volunteer for a partial amount of time and enjoy the event before or after. I am happy to vouch for your volunteer hours if you need any for school or work too.”
