Haunt the Block: A scary good time

Marshall County Emergency Management staff give treats and coloring books to costumed children and adults during Thursday night’s Haunt the Block. Emergency Management staff were stationed on the south side of the Marshall County Courthouse, and were joined by members of the Marshalltown Fire Department, Marshalltown Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Department of Corrections.

Alushia Fitzgerald - a Marshalltown Central Business District volunteer correctly predicted downtown would be “engulfed” with children. Fitzgerald and fellow CBD volunteers Diane and Don Henry, along with volunteer Rhetta Schmitt were stationed in front of the Tremont Grille.
Feynam Lin, dressed as a scarecrow, passes the Chef King restaurant on Main Street during “Haunt the Block” after grabbing a treat. Lin, a fifth grade student at Lenihan Intermediate Elementary, wore a similar costume last year — the Grim Reaper.
A Sub City of Marshalltown employee hands out a treat to a youth costumed as Spiderman Thursday evening during the annual Haunt the Block. Hundreds of youth dressed in costumes ranging from ninjas to princesses to pirates to football players filled downtown.
Tori MIller, manager of Brown’s Shoe Fit in Marshalltown, participates in Haunt the Block with her dog Wally and cat Judson. Miller was preparing to work at her store on East Main Street with colleagues.

Hundreds of ghouls and goblins, superheroes and princesses strolled Main Street yesterday during the annual Haunt the Block. Roughly 51 downtown businesses gave treats to children dressed in their Halloween costumes during the event, hosted by the Marshalltown Central Business District.
