No new Legionnaires’ cases reported to Iowa HHS in the last week

The Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Marshall County appears to be trending in a more positive direction as no new cases have been reported on the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) website for a week.

The case count has held steady at 74, with two deaths tied to the Legionella outbreak since it was first publicly reported on Sept. 4. Marshalltown Mayor Joel Greer told the T-R he was encouraged by the recent developments and hoped it would signify that the end was in sight.

“I am nothing short of ecstatic to see that the daily reports have reflected what was predicted by the state health department,” he said. “The offending cooling towers or whatever was generating the bacteria have probably been treated, shocked and cured to the point where we shouldn’t see anybody else getting sick (from) this bacteria here.”

Greer added that he has not received any further information on the testing of the 12 suspected cooling towers and doesn’t expect to receive a call from state or county officials when results have been returned.

“I have been replying to people on texts and emails and one call today from somebody who’s still pretty incensed that we had the parade and Oktemberfest downtown that maybe there will be a challenge to the state’s response that they cannot identify the towers because, if that is what the law is, maybe we all ought to be talking to our state or federal legislators and get that fixed,” Greer said.

Iowa’s business personhood law allows officials to keep the source of the outbreak confidential unless it is deemed to be in the public interest by either the Iowa HHS director or the state epidemiologist.

Starting at $4.38/week.
