Marshalltown woman killed in hit-and-run, PD investigating
A Marshalltown woman was struck and killed near the intersection of South 3rd Avenue and Main Street on Saturday night, and the driver who allegedly hit her is under investigation but has not been publicly identified.
According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, Melanie Katherine Nelson, 30, was crossing South 3rd Avenue just south of the intersection with East Main Street at 10:05 p.m. when she was struck by an unknown Dodge Ram pickup. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
Nelson was transported to UnityPoint hospital and pronounced dead. On Sunday afternoon, Marshalltown Police Chief Chris Jones told the T-R the suspected vehicle had been located, and several items of evidence were under review.
On Sunday evening, he added that the MPD had met with the owner of the suspected vehicle and will continue to work on processing the information and evidence they had collected.
