New 13th Street gift shop Harvest to Home celebrates soft opening
T-R PHOTO BY LANA BRADSTREAM — Kris Husak, owner of BKRY 146, and Cheryl Hayes, owner of the new 13th Street boutique Harvest to Home, are collaborating to bring new products and shopping experiences to customers. Harvest to Home hosted a soft opening on Wednesday.
The historic 13th Street District in Marshalltown has a new resident — the gift shop Harvest to Home.
Owner Cheryl Hayes is bringing bath and kitchen goods, candles, jewelry, items for kids and more to the neighborhood.
“We’re trying to be a little bit different than some of the other stores here,” she said. “We have baked goods. Every Friday, we will have fresh flowers, and then we have home and Christmas decor, bath, and body items, as well as food items.”
A soft opening was held at Harvest to Home on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. A grand opening is tentatively planned for the first week in December, as they are waiting for additional product lines to arrive. Hayes said they wanted to “try things out” with the soft opening and get word out about the new Marshalltown business.
“[The soft opening] was fabulous,” she said. “You couldn’t even get in the place in the morning — it was so busy.”
Owning a business is not new territory for Hayes, as she owns The Funky Zebras Boutique in several Iowa locations such as Ankeny, Ames and Cedar Falls.
“I’m from Marshalltown originally,” Hayes said. “I grew up here, and I wanted to give back to the community. This little area of 13th Street is really growing, and we wanted to be part of it.”
She chose the location which housed Be Unique Floral before the business closed. Hayes and crew did some renovations to the interior before opening on Wednesday. The plaster was ripped out, and new shiplap and floors installed.
“We wanted to make it kind of festive,” she said.
Hayes said some of the items available to customers are sourced locally, such as the baked goods from BKRY 146. Shown in a case next to the register, scrumptious cupcakes, scones and cookies are on display, made by bakery owner Kris Husak.
“Kris is an amazing baker,” Hayes said. “She’s my friend and I buy a lot of her goods, and there’s nothing like this in town, especially on 13th Street.”
According to Hayes, the flavors of the baked goods will change daily. Gluten-free options are also available.
“Kris will do special orders here, and she can also have you pick up here at this location,” she said. “We’re also going to do cake slices, as well as you can order a whole cake here.”
Hayes wanted to collaborate with Husak because of the quality of the pastries and make Harvest to Home a place for everyone.
“What’s really nice about our store — we can do baskets for people and deliver them,” she said. “We have gift baskets for bath and body. We’ve got a little something for everyone. We’ve also got Frasier Fir candles and Capri Blue. Nobody in town sells those, so it’s a niche because they are great products.”
