Some local elections decided by write-in votes
Some of the races on ballots for smaller towns looked short of candidates during Tuesday’s election.
In Albion, voters cast ballots for three at-large city council seats, but only one candidate — Sarah Dooley Rothman — was listed. She received 74 votes, and there were 177 write-ins.
The city of Laurel had the same situation, but with two candidates on the ballot — Troy Johnson (43 votes) and Darrell Bartlett (52). There were 12 write-in votes.
Other towns with at-large city council seats, and not enough candidates were Le Grand, which had two at-large and one candidate — Lou Ann Cooling (182) with 70 write-ins; Rhodes, two seats, one candidate — Madelyn Pitzen (52) and 39 write-ins; and St. Anthony, five seats, three candidates — Nicholas Plumski (7), John Hunter (7) and George Prescott (6) with eight write-in votes.
Two mayoral races — one in LeGrand and the other in St. Anthony — had no candidates on the ballots. However, there were 61 write-in votes for Le Grand mayor and two for St. Anthony. Another race which did not have a candidate was an at-large city council seat to fill a vacancy in Le Grand. There were 12 write-in votes cast for that seat.
