Two companies awarded early bid packages for Reimagine Miller project

Two companies were awarded early bid packages for the Miller Middle School project during the regular Monday Marshalltown Community School District Board of Education meeting.
Henkel Construction Company of Ames was awarded a $2.2 million bid package for the Miller Middle School precast concrete. CR glass of Cedar Rapids was awarded a $3.1 million bid package for glazing exterior glass.
MCSD Executive Director of Finance & Operations Randy Denham told the board no elevator packages were received.
“We did resubmit those out to bid,” he said. “I believe the plan is to bring those back to the Dec. 1 board meeting for approval. I did consult with our attorney. We can still move forward with approving this resolution. The estimated cost for the elevator package is $385,000. So, hopefully bids will come in under [the cost].”
Boyd Jones Senior Project Manager Michael Martin told the members the third bid should be forthcoming. Board President Sean Heitmann asked for clarification that the elevator package will go back out to bid. Martin said it will.
“We’re hopeful or anticipating more than zero bids?” Heitmann asked.
Martin told him a resolution was made and put into motion on what caused zero bids. He expects two or three companies to bid on the elevator package.
According to Martin, they have confidence in Henkel Construction and CR Glass.
Superintendent Theron Schutte asked for clarification that the two bid packages were less than the projected budget. Martin told him that was correct.
“We’re about shy of $1 million under budget for the precast, and I think we are $80,000 less for glazing to be exact,” he said. “So, trending in the right direction as we move into the next phase of bidding the project out.”
Board member Leah Stanley asked how many bids were received for each, and Martin told her three for each package were submitted.
Martin also provided an update on the Franklin Field revamping project, which is the first part of Reimagine Miller. The landscaping had a $3,394 change order to add landscaping around the detention pond. More earthwork was needed as additional concrete excavation and drainage around the concession stand were necessary.
“We’re still showing additional savings in that package of $70,000,” Martin said. “. . . That will be put back into the owners contingency.”
He added there was good news regarding the synthetic turf on the field. Since Sprinturf is a repeat customer of the district there were no change orders, so they were able to capture $13,000 of savings.
“Overall, we’re sitting really good,” Martin said. “We’re turning over $200,000 to the district, and hopefully a little bit more as we close up the contracts in the next couple of weeks.”
Schutte asked for a brief summary of what is left to be completed on the Franklin Field. Martin said the track will be completed in the spring. The concession stand and bleachers are ongoing and are slated to be completed by the end of November.
In other business:
Veteran board members Leah Stanley and Zach Wahl, along with newcomer Eric Goslinga, were sworn into office at the beginning of the annual meeting, which began after the regular board meeting. District residents gave them the most votes during the Nov. 4 election. Each will serve a four-year term.
