Marshalltown native dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound after standoff in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn man who has since been identified in social media posts as a native of Marshalltown shot and killed himself after a standoff with police over the execution of a search warrant on Thursday morning, according to multiple media reports.

A Facebook post from Poweshiek County Sheriff Matt Maschmann indicated that 34-year-old Skoky Gene Strohm, who was living in an upper story apartment at 142 Jackson St. in Brooklyn, was the target of a search warrant that was executed beginning at approximately 6 a.m. Thursday morning and was the subject of a narcotics investigation, with active warrants out for his arrest.

“The Tactical Team made entry into the apartment, and Strohm fled into an attic area of the apartment. Negotiators with the Iowa State Patrol were on scene and contacted Strohm and attempted at length to get him to surrender peacefully,” the post reads. “At approximately 1005 hours (10:05 a.m.), Strohm was located in the attic space and found to be deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called and is assisting with (the) death investigation at this time.”

Maschmann added that the BGM Community School, which is also located in Brooklyn, was notified of the ongoing situation, and no students or staff were in any danger.

“The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and any further updates will be provided as soon as possible,” he concluded.

A subsequent post on the Marshall County Inmates Facebook post identified Strohm as a Marshalltown native and former Marshall County resident.
