Marshalltown records state’s highest wind gust during recent blizzard

The highest wind gust from the recent blizzard that began on Sunday and continued into Monday morning in northern and central Iowa — 61 miles per hour — was recorded at the Marshalltown airport just north of town, according to information shared by the National Weather Service.

Marshall County received an average of three inches of snow total, which was well below the four-inch total recorded in Fort Dodge, the 5.4 inches of snowfall in Mason City and 6.1 inches in Allamakee County, the highest number in the state. A large swath of Interstate 35 between Ames and Mason City was closed completely from Sunday evening until Monday afternoon after a 14-vehicle pile-up in Hamilton County. The Fort Dodge Messenger reported that a Hamilton County deputy was hit while responding to the accident, resulting in heavy damage to the vehicle but no injury to the officer.

Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips told the T-R that his office responded to seven weather related traffic incidents since the weather event had begun as of Monday morning — five disabled vehicles in the ditch, one crash with minor injuries, and one crash with property damage only.

“The high winds with blowing snow in some areas are creating difficulties for drivers, mostly on hard surface roads where the blowing snow is creating icy conditions. I expect the conditions to continue through the morning hours,” he said on Monday.

Marshalltown Police Chief Chris Jones said his department responded to one property damage crash on Sunday and one on Monday morning.
