LAUREL — A Laurel man was arrested Monday night after a chase that involved deputies from both Jasper and Marshall counties and reached top speeds of 100 miles per hour.
According to a press release from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to stop a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado for a speed violation near the Marshall County line northbound when the driver of that vehicle, later identified as 34-year-old Zachary Hobbs of rural Laurel, failed to cooperate and initiated a pursuit that led deputies into Marshall County, looping around Laurel before heading back southbound, where a Jasper County deputy successfully deployed stop sticks and punctured one of the tires.
The vehicle nevertheless continued, reaching top speeds of 100 miles per hour while driving through numerous stop signs. At about 7:54 p.m., the vehicle crashed near the intersection of 290th Street and Parker Avenue northwest of Laurel. Hobbs was then taken into custody without further incident and charged with OWI — second offense, carrying weapons while intoxicated, tampering with an interlock device, eluding — speeds over 25 miles per hour, speeding, 10 counts of failure to obey a stop sign, failure to yield half the roadway, three counts of careless driving, reckless driving, failure to maintain control, failure to give continuous turn signal and unsafe entry onto sidewalk/road.
As of Tuesday, Hobbs was being held in the Jasper County Jail on a $14,175.70 bond awaiting his initial court appearance.
