Marshalltown man jailed after alleged apartment break-in
An effort to break into an apartment on Sunday has led to an arrest and a second-degree attempted burglary charge.
Marquis Haynes, 26, of Marshalltown, is being held in the Marshall County Jail with a $6,000 bond after he allegedly tried to break into someone’s apartment. According to the criminal complaint filed by the Marshalltown Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call about an ongoing break-in.
Upon arrival, they saw Haynes standing outside the door and he said he was there to see his friend. Based on damage to the door and the frame, it is estimated Haynes shouldered the door in his attempt to get inside.
After speaking with three people inside the apartment, the officers found that no one knew Haynes. When officers arrested him, he resisted and fought, leading to a charge of interference with official acts. He has also been charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief.
Second-degree attempted burglary is a Class D felony, carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,245 fine.
