A new antique and thrift store has opened in downtown Marshalltown offering everything from clothing to furniture to electronics to household items to collectibles and antiques.

Grandma’s Attic, located at 205 S. 3rd Ave., is focused on providing a wide variety of items and is a partnership between Dan Warnell, his daughter Amanda, her fiance Veno Stewart and Clinton Sanford. It has been open since Dec. 1.

“We’ve got a little bit of everything, and I can guarantee that,” Dan said. “It’s turned into, like, a family business.”

Dan explained that his storage units got so full he had to start selling some of the products he was keeping in them, and he and Amanda said business has been slow but steady thus far.

“The main goal that I think I had was just getting to know the community better. A lot of people come in here (that) we see at Walmart (or) we see at the gas station. We never get a chance to say hi because we don’t know them, but when they come in here, a soft conversation turns into friendship,” Stewart said. “We have regular customers that come in now daily, and that’s probably about 10 that come in every day. And we also provide coffee, refreshments, donuts. Some just come and hang out and look at things, and (it’s) very seldom somebody walks out without anything.”

Amanda said the name of the store is a tribute to her mother Darlynda, who is also involved in the business when she isn’t caring for her and Dan’s son with ALS.

Grandma’s Attic accepts cash and card payments and is currently open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, but Amanda said those hours are subject to change after the grand opening, possibly to a 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. window.

A grand opening and ribbon cutting with the Chamber Ambassadors is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30 at 11:30 a.m. with chili, hot dogs and drinks for guests who attend. Grandma’s Attic can be reached at (641) 328-2301.
