Progress 2026: UnityPoint Health — ‘We are proud to continue legacy of local care’
State Center Clinic undergoing a major remodel
UnityPoint Health (UPH) operates a comprehensive healthcare network of more than 20-not-for-profit regional hospitals and 19+ community network hospitals and more than 400 clinics in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin, according to its website.
It is headquartered in West Des Moines.
But to their thousands of patients in Conrad, Marshalltown, State Center and Tama-Toledo, all that matters is the health care received and in the time and manner needed.
Accordingly, the T-R contacted UPH officials at its Waterloo offices and inquired about new equipment, facility improvements and personnel impacting health care delivery in those communities.
“In 2017, UPH assumed operations of the Marshalltown hospital and its affiliated family medicine clinics, including Conrad, Marshalltown, State Center, and Tama/Toledo,” said Carolyn Barko, interim market president for UnityPoint Health – Waterloo and Regional Vice President for Clinic Operations in a recent email to the T-R.
“Family medicine services have long been an important part of those communities and UPH is proud to continue that legacy of local care,” she said.
New UPH Family Medicine Clinic in Conrad
A new state-of-the-art clinic opened in the rural community of approximately 1,100 residents last November.
It replaced a smaller clinic which had operated in town for many years.
The site for the new clinic was donated to UPH by a local resident. It was retained by UPH despite numerous offers to sell it to other entities according to UPH officials.
Construction of the new clinic was completed on time.
“The previous clinic was busy, welcoming approximately 12,000 patients visits per year,” said Barko. “Now, just a few months into operating in the beautiful, new clinic, we’re already well ahead of that pace.”
Barko said their primary commitment is to Conrad residents and those of surrounding communities. However, the clinic also welcomes patients from northeast and central Iowa, thanks to UPHs strong affiliation and reputation in Marshalltown, Grundy Center and other communities.
“The clinic is anchored by three providers: Tim Cooper, PA-C; Steve Scurr, DO; and Abbie Sharp, ARNP,” she said. “In all, there are approximately a dozen team members supporting the clinic. There’s no question the patients and visitors are enjoying the upgraded experience. In addition to building a spacious, energy efficient facility, the new site expands our footprint to 5,500-square-feet and includes an on-site lab, X-ray services and telehealth capabilities for specialty care. The additional space allows our providers to serve more patients, while the enhanced amenities improve access to care for those who depend on us. Overall, the new clinic has been every bit the success we hoped it would be.”
The clinic’s address is 205 N. Hartwig St. Days and business hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday only. Patients may schedule by calling 641-366-2123 or communicate directly with their care team through the MyUnityPoint patient portal – via app or browser.
UPH-Marshalltown and facilities
UPHM operates a 16-bed acute care hospital and 24/7/365 Emergency Room among numerous other health care services at its main campus – 55 UnityPoint Way – Marshalltown.
Its inpatient beds are “regularly maintained,” but the facility is licensed for 25 beds, according to a company spokesperson.
The ER “approaches 20,000 visits annually,” said Ron Alston, interim director of operations for Marshalltown.
Shari King – the previous director of Marshalltown operations is now interim director of operations for UPH-Quad Cities.
No new renovations have taken place at the main campus.
“The hospital was essentially new as of 2022,” Alston said. “And the family medicine clinic was relocated to Nicholas Drive and renovated. We do have new technology at the main campus in the form of a new MRI scanner. The new MRI machine brings faster scan times, sharper images and new diagnostic capabilities to the community.
In addition, it will soon allow for Breast MRIs for the first time. While mammograms remain the gold standard for routine breast cancer screening, Breast MRI provides highly detailed imaging, and it will allow radiologists to see through dense tissue and more clearly identify abnormalities that may not be visible on traditional screening tools. This new scanner is a huge piece of equipment, and ours took two months to get installed.”
Elsewhere – UPH Family Medicine – Marshalltown on Nicholas Drive welcomed Maggie Potter, PA-C, to the team.
The UPH Express Clinic at 1704 S. Center St. Marshalltown was newly constructed in 2021.
“The specific breakdown of visits across clinics, hospital services and outpatient interactions can get complicated, so we don’t typically publish detailed counts,” Alston said.
The main campus, UPH Family Medicine and the UPH Express Clinic service Marshalltown’s population of nearly 28,000. The facilities also serve those who reside in the Marshalltown area.
UPH Family Medicine Clinic in State Center
“UPH began a major remodeling – including updates to windows and roofing – in the first half of 2025.” said Barko.
“Before renovations, the clinic was hosting 3,400 patients annually,” she said.
State Center is a rural community of approximately 1,600 residents, according to U.S. Census data.
“Full interior updates and upgrades started in earnest last September,” she said.
The clinic never fully closed during construction. However, beginning in September, provider Mandi Konz, ARNP, shifted most appointments to the nearby family medicine clinic in Marshalltown. She has been seeing patients in Marshalltown on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings since September, while seeing a select number of patients at the State Center clinic on Friday afternoons.
The exterior updates, such as new windows and roofing, were essentially maintenance improvements that enhance safety and energy efficiency.
The interior renovations are where patients will see the most meaningful impact. The renovations include enlarging the exam rooms, adding digital X-ray services and making updates to the lab, nurse’s station and restrooms. The floor plan and flooring are also being changed to better support patient care and team efficiency. Each of these enhancements is designed with patients in mind – creating more space, bringing new technology onsite, improving convenience and upgrading amenities to deliver a better overall experience. Team members will also benefit from a more functional, modern and efficient workspace.”
Barko said renovations are progressing well, and the project remains on track to have them completed this spring.
“We can’t wait to share the beautifully renovated clinic with our State Center patients,” she said.
The clinic’s address is 503 Third Ave. S.W. in State Center.
Tama-Toledo Clinic
The clinic at 1307 S. Broadway St. in Toledo hosts 6,900 patient visits annually, wrote Barko in an email to the T-R.
The clinic serves the rural communities of Tama and Toledo, which have a combined population of approximately 5,500 residents. Toledo is the seat of Tama County.
“At this time, there are no planned or scheduled renovations,” she said. “The most recent updates to the clinic occurred nearly three years ago and included a small-scale remodel consisting of new paint and flooring. While we may consider additional renovations at some point in the future, there are no defined plans at this time.”
