Progress 2026: Work on Miller Middle School slated to begin next month

Invision Architecture has rendered a concept of the new commons area in front of the auditorium entry at Miller Middle School, and it was presented to the Marshalltown Community School District Board of Education during a work session on Monday evening.
SUBMITTED GRAPHIC Part of the Reimagine Miller project is renovating the historic auditorium while preserving its history. This rendering shows improvements which will be done. The entire building will benefit from over $100 million in renovation and construction.

Residents can expect to see a lot more activity at Miller Middle School as the large Reimagine Miller renovation project is slated to begin this year.

The extensive project has been broken into eight phases and timeframes:

• Phase 1 will begin in April and last until April 2027. It will focus on the auxiliary gym, commons and the kitchen addition;

• Phase 2 will stretch from June to August and will include elevators, the courtyard, the southwest parking lot and the academic addition;

• Phase 3, which focuses on the south side new build of the academic wing, will take place from April 2027 to June 2028;

• Phase 4, from June 2027 to August 2027, will be the north basement area and refreshing classrooms in the 2005 wing;

• Phase 5 lasts most of 2028, from January to November, will focus on the student success center, library and basement auxiliary classrooms;

• Phase 6 takes place in the 2028 summer months and will be the completion of the student success center and retrofitting the north classrooms in the academic wing;

• Phase 7, from November 2028 to July 2029, will consist of work on the band and orchestra areas, fitness center, multipurpose room and the construction crew will begin moving off campus;

• Phase 8 will last from April 2029 to August 2029.

The Marshalltown Community School District Board of Education awarded bids to 17 Iowa companies, including three in Marshalltown. Con-Struct will receive $3.5 million for earthwork and utilities. RAMMS was awarded a $2.9 million contract for concrete work. Ciro Dilorio will receive $684,094 for masonry work.

Other nearby companies which were awarded bids include Van Maanen of Newton, which will get $10.2 million for electrical work and also $216,467 for owner-supplied equipment; Premier Edge of Grimes will get $151,588 for roller shades and; Blackhawk Automatic Sprinklers of Cedar Falls with $1 million for fire sprinklers.

Other Iowa companies include Lansink Construction of Johnston which will receive $7.7 million for general trades; two companies in Des Moines – Earth Services & Abatement, $1 million, demolition and; Skold Construction Services, $209,300, polished and sealed concrete; two West Des Moines companies – HSI, $6.9 million, drywall, framing and paint and; Proctor Mechanical, $16 million, mechanical and $173,529 for owner-supplied equipment; two companies in Indianola – Poindexter Flooring, $1.7 million, flooring and; Phillips Floors, $209,500, wood flooring; Nagle Signs of Waterloo, 261,584, signage; Hardscapes Solutions of Iowa of Cedar Rapids, $495,210, landscaping and; Mid American of Davenport, $516,200, interior glass.
