Members of the Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD) performed a “confined space rescue” inside the old downtown hospital on Sunday evening after two people were found unconscious there.
At approximately 6:30 p.m., the MFD was dispatched to the building for a reported gas leak in the ambulance bay, according to a press release. It was also reported that there were two victims, one conscious and one unconscious. There are no utilities (gas, electric or water) connected to the building.
Upon arrival of the fire department, firefighters were directed to an open door by officers with the Marshalltown Police Department (MPD). Air monitoring showed no contaminants in the building. Another person already at the scene directed firefighters to the location of the victims. Two victims were found inside a cylindrical shaped boiler type container unresponsive, but alive.
Fire crews declared a “Confined Space Rescue” and began operations by ventilating the space with fresh air. Shortly after ventilation of the space had begun, the victims regained consciousness and were rescued from the container using a rescue rope system and equipment.
The two patients were transported from the scene by UnityPoint EMS, and their current condition is unknown.
