STATE CENTER — After initially sharing a brief summary of the incident and photos on Sunday, the State Center Police Department has issued a more detailed press release and a dashcam video of the events that transpired Saturday night and ultimately resulted in an impaired juvenile driver crashing into the Veterans Memorial at the State Center Rose Garden.
At approximately 11:10 p.m., Chief Jon Thomas, who was on patrol, located a truck traveling eastbound on Highway 30 at 93 miles per hour in a 65 zone.
“As the officer crossed the grass median to catch up to the vehicle and initiate a traffic stop, the truck turned North on Gerhart Avenue, quickly accelerating to avoid contact with law enforcement,” the release reads. “The officer lost sight of the vehicle upon approaching the intersection of 235th Street and Gerhart Avenue but was able to identify the vehicle’s direction of travel based upon the loud exhaust of the vehicle as the vehicle turned West driving back towards State Center.”
The driver of the truck turned off his headlights while driving westbound on 235th Street. The road features would have allowed the officer to see the taillights of the truck for well over a mile, though the officer was unable to observe the headlights due to the driver’s actions.
As the vehicle entered State Center, brake lights were observed, but the officer was initially unable to determine if the vehicle turned onto another street or continued westbound through town.
Upon entering the east side of State Center, Thomas observed dust in the air in the 300 block of 4th Street Southeast. As the officer continued into the area, a crash scene was located at the Veterans Memorial in the State Center Rose Garden.
The driver of the vehicle was determined to be a juvenile and was taken to a juvenile detention center after being charged with Operating While Intoxicated and eluding. The passenger of the vehicle was arrested for an outstanding warrant not related to the incident.
“The officer in this case was never close enough to identify the vehicle’s license plate and remained a significant distance behind the truck during the entire incident. The vehicle was only located due to the motor vehicle crash and otherwise likely would have not been located due to the distance between the suspect vehicle and the police vehicle,” the release reads. “The details of this case are being shared due to public interest in this case and the significant damage caused because of this incident. The driver of this vehicle was driving 93 mph while impaired and presented a danger to the public at the time of initial contact with the State Center Police. The driver’s behavior continued to pose a danger to the public throughout the entire incident.”
The video of this incident provides transparency to the public and shows the danger created by this impaired, reckless driver.”
The incident was not related to any West Marshall prom activities or students.
