Lasley found guilty of one count of second-degree murder

A 12-member jury on Friday found Ilias Lasley guilty of a lesser charge of second-degree murder of Frances Gasca, less than 24 hours after closing statements were made by defense and prosecution attorneys.

Lasley’s face did not display a lot of emotion as the guilty verdict was read out loud, but that was how he maintained himself during his eight-day-long trial.

Lasley, 31, of Ankeny, was originally charged with two counts of first-degree murder of Mario Murillo, 28, and Gasca, 33, both of Marshalltown. The charges stem from an April 19, 2024 shooting at a residence north of Marshalltown on 182nd Street.

The jury determined Lasley was not guilty of Murillo’s death. They also found Lasley guilty of two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, which are Class D felonies carrying maximum penalties of five years in prison and a $7,500 fine. Second-degree murder is a Class B felony and carries a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison.

The courtroom was lined with law enforcement officers as people waited to hear the news of Lasley’s fate. Before the jury was brought into the courtroom, Judge Bethany Currie addressed the presence of law enforcement.

“I know this is a very busy courtroom. I know there are a lot of emotions. I know this has been a long time of waiting. Whatever the verdicts are, whether you’re happy or unhappy or somewhere in the middle, please keep your cool,” she said. “We have a lot of law enforcement present to try to keep emotions down.”

The people in the courtroom kept their cool as the verdict was read by Currie. There was no audible crying or distress heard.

Currie ordered a pre-sentence investigation to be conducted and determined his sentencing will occur in roughly six weeks.

“Murder in the second degree is, of course, a forcible felony, so bail is not available,” she said.
