School board, interrupted by tornado warning, approves Miller items
The town tornado siren interrupted the Marshalltown Community School District Board of Education meeting Monday evening. As Marshalltown High School Principal Justin Bolliver sought approval of the 2026 graduate list, cell phone weather alerts began ringing in the meeting room.
Some attendees left, but board members finished, with the exception of Board Member Maria Morales, who left due to the tornado warning, which occurred roughly three hours after the meeting began.
No discussion was held on Miller Middle School construction and renovation project agenda items, but they received unanimous approval, not counting Morales’ absence.
The board awarded a $516,200 contract for interior glass and glazing to Mid-American Glazing Systems.
Members also approved a change order from Van Maanen to add $305,275 in auditorium alternates which were approved in April.
The alternates include the electrical portions for the orchestra shell ceiling panel winches, other rigging winches, the stage company switch, portable stage lighting, wireless microphones and the scenery projection system. The items were all priced as alternates and were accepted after final pricing was complete.
Another change order which received approval was for Proctor Mechanical for the addition of a gas line which will come out of the project allowance. The added gas line will keep existing gas ovens active after the removal of the gas line on the east side of the building.
MCSD Director of Technology Amy Harmsen also received approval to spend $146,540 of the bond money to purchase tech items.
The competition and auxiliary gyms will both receive new scoreboards. Harmsen recommended using Daktronics for four boards at a cost of $24,998. The boards will be mounted by approved Miller contractors.
High lumen laser projectors are needed for the auditorium and commons at Miller. Harmsen recommended buying them from CDWG at a cost of $95,702.
She also recommended purchasing display televisions through Bluum for $25,839. The televisions will be displayed through the school.
Board members also approved advertising the sale of $29 million in general obligation bonds for the Reimagine Miller project.
The ground was broken for the construction and renovation of Miller Middle School in April.
