Primary election polls open tomorrow for party members
Tomorrow is primary election day in Iowa, and Marshall County voters who are members of one of the major political parties – Democratic or Republican – will have plenty of choices on their ballots.
Marshall County Auditor/Recorder Nan Benson said even though polls close at 8 p.m. tomorrow, the people who are still in line at polling locations will be able to cast their ballots. People who show up after the closing will not be able to vote.
The county election workers will bring the results from each of the 11 polling locations to the Marshall County Election Center.
“I’d love to say we will have results by this time, but will we have lines?” she said. “If someone is in line at 7:59 p.m., they get to vote. One year at the Election Center, we had people lined up down the street and we had staff giving out tickets.”
Just because the results of the primary will be determined tomorrow evening, that does not mean Benson and her staff can take it easy on Wednesday. She said Assistant Auditor/Recorder Jessie Chizek will balance the voter credits at each polling location.
“Then all the equipment comes back,” Benson said. “She balances everything to get everything ready for the canvas. If everything balances great, it’s easy.”
Chizek said that process can take days.
The winners of the primary elections will move forward to the November general election to face the candidate of the opposing party.
BALLOTS
The Republican and Democratic parties have separate ballots for the primary election. Only registered Republicans can determine which of their party candidates will move forward to the November general election, and the same for registered Democrats and their party.
On Marshall County Republican ballots, the candidates are:
United States Senator: Jim Carlin or Rep. Ashley Hinson.
United States Representative for District 4: Chris McGowan.
Governor: Zach Lahn, Brad Sherman, Adam Steen, Eddie Andrews or Rep. Randy Feenstra. Benson said the winner must get 35 percent of the votes. If no candidate gets the required number, a state convention will be held to determine the Republican candidate.
