Assistance League of Marshalltown launches popular annual fundraiser

The time has come for the annual Assistance League of Marshalltown chicken pot pie fundraiser.
Sales of the popular savory pastries began Aug. 1 and will extend through Sept. 12.
Assistance League member Taylor Everman is in charge of pot pie publicity and said this is the fourth year for the sale. She reflected on the changes made since the inception.
"In previous years, we have introduced the 6-inch small pies, and they have been a big hit," she said. "Six-inch pies are back again this year, as well as the larger 10-inch pot pies. This year, we have also added the option of in-town delivery, [which] costs $5 and you can choose that option during checkout when you are ordering your pies."
After the sale ends Sept. 12, the ladies of the Assistance League will gather members together to assemble the pies.
"It takes all 40 active members and five to 10 sustainers to make all the pies," Everyman said. "We have one day where we all gather together, suit up in aprons, hairnets and gloves and form assembly lines to thaw crust, make filling, fill the pies, crimp the pies, label, package and freeze them. It's truly amazing what 40-plus determined women can accomplish in one day."
On average, the ladies assemble 1,000 pot pies each year.
Assistance League customers will have the chance to pick up their flaky, frozen pastries stuffed with chicken, vegetables and gravy on Oct. 16-17 at the First Presbyterian Church, more than one month after the sale ends.
The profits from the pot pie fundraiser go directly back into the community.
"Last year the Assistance League helped with many projects in the community including; Marshalltown Baseball Club field improvements, Marshalltown Auditorium Foundation, Senior Citizen Center, Emergency Food Box, Marshalltown Soccer Club expansion, Hogland Water Safety Project and many more," Everyman said. "Supporting the pot pie sale helps the Assistance League support many other projects in the community."

Purchases of Assistance League of Marshalltown chicken pot pies can be made online at assistanceleagueofmarshalltown.org and clicking on the QR code. Assistance League members will also have a booth and take orders at the Sept. 11 Harvest Market at 13th Street. The 6-inch pies are $11 and a 10-inch costs $20.
