North end of Center Street Viaduct gets fresh concrete Monday

Much attention has been focused on the railings surrounding the Center Street Viaduct during recent city council meetings, but on Monday, the north section of the currently closed bridge above the Central Iowa River Gun Club headquarters got a fresh layer of concrete to ensure that the driving experience will be smoother once it reopens, which is tentatively scheduled for November.
"This morning marked another big milestone... We were able to do the concrete work associated with the deck overlay on the north vaulted abutment," Public Works Director Heather Thomas said.
Later this week, work will continue with concrete pours on the roller bearing joint above the Old Timer Tavern, which is expected to take about two to three weeks to wrap up, and from there, crews will move on to the second finger and expansion joint. That process is expected to take longer but will be the last "big item," according to Thomas.
"Right now, we are on track with the working days on the contract. There were 120, and they've added just a couple in some change orders that came about on the project. But we're looking at a mid-November timeframe for getting that reopened. We've got some direction on the railing to get that moving forward and not delay any openings on the bridge," she said.
Only the section of the road over the Gun Club area is being overlaid, and the rest of the pavement will remain the same. Boulder Contracting is serving as the general contractor on the project.
