On Wednesday, a Marshalltown man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with a suspicious infant death that occurred on Aug. 29, according to a press release issued by the Marshalltown Police Department (MPD).
On the afternoon of Aug. 29, the MPD received notification of a suspicious infant death at the UnityPoint hospital emergency room in Marshalltown, and an investigation began. Over the next 30 days, the investigation progressed with help from the Marshall County Medical Examiner's Office, the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office, and the Iowa State Division of Criminal Investigation. According to court records, a search warrant related to the case was executed on Sept. 1.
On Wednesday at 10:47 a.m., MPD detectives arrested Yonatan Miguel Vasquez-Avalos, 19, of Marshalltown, and charged him with first-degree murder, a Class A felony, child endangerment causing death, a Class B felony and domestic assault with strangulation, a Class D felony.
