The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a fire inside a vacant house on North Center Street early Sunday morning and found portions of the upper floor collapsed as a result.

The MFD was called to the residence at 704 N. Center St. at 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, and upon arrival, firefighters found a vacant, two-story residence with fire showing from multiple upper and lower-level windows. Due to the condition and history of the structure, as well as the fire conditions encountered, incident command initiated a defensive fire attack.

Firefighters did not enter the residence because of unsafe structural conditions. Portions of the upper floor had collapsed during the incident, and the roof had previously collapsed. Command determined that the structure was unsafe for interior operations.

Marshalltown Police, Marshall County Communications, and Unity Point EMS Marshalltown Public Works, and Alliant Energy all assisted in the operation, and firefighters were at the scene for approximately four hours.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
