Shoppers flock to grand opening of Marshalltown TJ Maxx Sunday morning

By Robert Maharry 3 min read

A large crowd of around 100 excited shoppers eagerly waited outside of the brand new TJ Maxx store at the Shops at Marshalltown on Sunday -- so many that the doors actually opened before the scheduled 8 a.m. timeframe on an overcast, rainy morning.

After a brief ribbon cutting and welcoming remarks from the store manager, shoppers were off to the races hunting for deals at the newest location of the discount clothing giant, which operates over 1,000 stores in the United States. It is the latest new store to open inside the renovated mall that was purchased by Reserve Development of Dallas, Texas in 2025, with Burlington set to open next on Sept. 18.

One of those shoppers was Marshalltown Mayor Mike Ladehoff, who told the T-R the store made him excited about the future of the mall and for the community as a whole.

"For a long time now, we've had lots of people now driving outside of town to get some of the things that they need, and with this mall opening, TJ Maxx and Burlington, Shoe Sensation, everything is going well. I'm excited for the future of Marshalltown," he said. "I think the Chamber needs a big kudos on this. They did an excellent job. It is really, really hard to find people who are willing to come in and put in almost $40 million to redevelop a mall. There are dead malls all over the place, so this bodes well for Marshalltown."

He added that once the mall fills up, it will once again serve as an "anchor" for Marshalltown. As part of its grand opening, TJ Maxx made a $10,000 donation to the House of Compassion, and the mayor took that as a positive sign that they are interested in being an active supporter of the community.

"That's what we like to see from new businesses," Ladehoff said. "It's a relationship that just builds Marshalltown."

The mayor joked that he would be returning with his wife -- and a truck -- later in the day to make sure they had enough room to take all of their purchases home. Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce President/CEO John Hall also expressed excitement about the opening.

"We are excited to welcome TJ Maxx to the Marshalltown market! We know that our community loves to shop with TJ Maxx based on retail data and are so glad to now have this option for people to shop locally instead of having to travel for this retail option," he said. "This opening continues to build on the momentum we are seeing the in retail sector and we look forward to additional celebrations over the coming months thanks to the tremendous investment from Reserve Development."

TJ Maxx is located at 2500 S. Center St. Ste. 350 and will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily.
