The 40th annual Oktemberfest got off to a beautiful start on Saturday morning with ideal fall conditions for the 5K run, but unfortunately, the rain that has been so persistent in recent weeks reappeared as the parade began at 10 a.m. Nonetheless, the event went on despite cancellations from all of the marching bands scheduled to participate, and thousands of residents and visitors stuck it out in the rain to see representatives from local businesses and organizations marching and wait for a piece of candy -- or even an entire rack of ribs courtesy of JBS. The fun continued throughout the afternoon with live music, historic trolley rides, a cornhole tournament and the carnival attractions culminating with Marshalltown’s own Exit 185 rocking the main stage from 7 to 10 p.m. The festivities concluded on Sunday with a community worship service, musical performances from the MHS Mariachi Band and the Harmony Sisters, and live dancing by Grupo de Bailo Folklorico.
