They say money can't buy happiness . . . but it can buy a purse.
The 17th annual Marshalltown Area United Way (MAUW) Power of the Purse "Couture in Bloom - Accessorizing for a Stronger Community" fundraiser is scheduled for Oct. 23, an event which attracts purse fanatics and residents seeking a good time with friends and community members.
MAUW Executive Director Debbie Collins said the event, the largest annual fundraiser for MAUW, is significant.
"Bringing people together through fashion, fun and philanthropy, this special event celebrates the power of community generosite," she said. "Through purse raffles, auctions and community support, Power of the Purse raises vital funds to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families across Marshall County."
The finishing touches on the auction packages are underway, but Collins said they have close to 40 silent auction packages and 42 live auction packages. Auction items not only include designer purses and wallets, but getaways, services, event tickets, season passes, cooking classes, one-of-a-kind items and more.
"Don't miss our Louis Vuitton raffle," she said. "You'll have the chance to win one of three Louis Vuitton purses. Raffle tickets are available for $10 each, three for $25 or 12 for $100. Best of all, you do not have to be present to win."
The fundraising goal for Power of the Purse is $66,000, but Collins' personal goal is $75,000.
"Every ticket purchased, sponsorship secured, purse donated and bid placed helps United Way fund 25 local partner organizations delivering 30 programs throughout Marshall County," she said. "Together, we're making a difference in four key areas – community resiliency, financial security, health community and youth opportunity."
Besides the chance to win a bid in the auction – featuring Fred VanMetre as auctioneer – there will also be entertainment provided by Ramon and food – a JBS-sponsored Dijon mustard pork loin, fresh green bean and tomato salad, cheesy potatoes, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes and dinner rolls.
"Jules Wight and her amazing students from Bobcat Cafe will be preparing delicious fruit pizzas and chiffon cake bites," Collins said. "We are grateful to our sponsors and community partners for helping make this event memorable."
The MAUW has sold close to 200 tickets to the event, which will be emceed by Kyle Martin. Collins said there is still time for people to buy by either calling the office at 641-752-4688, stopping by in person, 709 S Center St, Ste 135, or visiting unitedwaymarshalltown.org to reserve spots. Louis Vuitton raffle tickets can also be purchased on the website.
"Power of the Purse has become a popular community tradition because it combines the excitement of designer handbags, unique auction items, great food and an enjoyable evening out with a meaningful purpose," Collins said. "It gives friends, businesses and community members an opportunity to come together, have fun and make a difference. This event demonstrates the creativity, generosity and community spirit of giving. I am honored to carry on this tradition and am deeply grateful to everyone who makes it possible year after year."
She thanked committee members, sponsors, donors and everyone who helped make the Power of the Purse happen in 2026.
"Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket, sponsored a table, bought raffle tickets, placed a bid or made a donation," Collins added. "Your participation makes a real difference. Thank you for helping us continue this wonderful 17-year tradition. Together, we are making Marshall County stronger, one act of generosity at a time."
