A high-speed police pursuit of a Nebraska man who fled from authorities in Marshall County on Friday afternoon ended with a head-on collision along Highway 30 in Cedar Rapids that left both the suspect and the 16-year-old driver he collided with dead.
According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, 36-year-old Garrett Sager of Grand Island, Neb. fled from law enforcement in Marshall County with a chase ensuing across four counties. During the pursuit, Sager fired on law enforcement and struck an occupied police cruiser.
The report indicates that "a final stopping attempt" occurred in Cedar Rapids, resulting in the head-on collision that killed both Sager and 16-year-old Kayan Williams of Cedar Rapids.
While the reason for his attempted apprehension in Marshall County has not yet been publicly disclosed, court records show that Sager had multiple criminal convictions in Iowa dating back almost two decades. A post on the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows school district's Facebook page confirmed that Williams was the son of C-G-D Middle School Principal Brian Williams.
"There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow that comes with the loss of a child. During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with Mr. Wiiliams and his entire family," Superintendent Jared Carter wrote.
