Leonard was Baptized at Dillon Lutheran Church, Dillon, Iowa, where he was also confirmed. He was raised on the family farm north east of Marshalltown, Iowa. He received his education through the 8th grade from the rural community school at Ferguson, Iowa, close to his rural home.

Leonard was united in marriage to Sharon Elsie Freiberg on February 10, 1956 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Marshalltown, Iowa. He worked at an implement dealership in Marshalltown for several years which then began about a 30 Year span of working for several different farmers in the Marshalltown area. In 1988 he then began a 10 year career with Security Bank in Marshalltown, Iowa, retiring in 1998. At that time Leonard and Sharon moved to Salina, Kansas, to be close to their oldest son, Dave and his family. Leonard then worked part time at the Southgate Dillon’s store until his health forced him to retire again. He continued his hobby of woodworking, furnishing numerous toys, games and puzzles to Heartland Head Start and Sunflower Adult Daycare both located in Salina, Kansas.

Preceding him in death are his daughter, Donna Jane Klinefelter; his parents, Albert and Avis Gummert; and his sister, Betty Bennett.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon sons, David Dean (Kathy) Gummert and Gary Allen (Dorie) Gummert, daughter, Dianne Elaine (Rev. Dr. Michael) Bingenheimer; brother, Dale (Barb) Gummert; sister, Delores (Azmi) Hajjaj, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Monday, September 22, 2014 at Christ The King Lutheran Church, 111 W, Magnolia, Salina, Kansas. A private family inurnment will be at a later date to take place in Marshalltown, Iowa. Memorials maybe made to the church.
