Lawrence “Larry” Beving, 73
Lawrence “Larry” Beving, age 73, of Ackley, died on Sunday, September 28, 2014, of pulmonary fibrosis at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Faith Presbyterian Church in Ackley with burial at a later date. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7:30 pm at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley. The family is honoring Larry’s wishes to be cremated after the funeral services.
Larry was born on November 25, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa to Joe and Gertrude (Jacob) Beving. In early elementary school, he moved to the rural Ackley area. Larry attended both the German Township country school and Ackley Community Schools; he graduated from Ackley High School in 1959.
In his youth, Larry was a member of 4-H and showed swine and cattle at the Grundy County Fair. He enjoyed playing football for the Ackley Raiders. Larry served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965. After his discharge he farmed with his father and continued to implement the conservation practices his father initiated.
Larry married Bonnie Lou Carr on April 20, 1969 at the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls. He was a member of the American Legion Post 252 in Ackley and served as its commander for three years. Larry also served as a Trustee of German Township. He was a member of a number of local organizations including the Dollars for Scholars Committee, A-G Booster Club, Pheasants Forever, and Ducks Unlimited. Larry was awarded the Iowa State Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 1996.
After retiring from farming, Larry worked at a number of agricultural-related businesses including Hunt’s Farm and the Aplington Sale Barn. He also was a crop insurance adjustor with Farmers Mutual Hail.
Larry enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren at their sports games and on the farm. He was an avid reader and visited area libraries. Larry enjoyed playing cards as well as visiting with people, including friends at the Cleves elevator and Ag Machinery Service, and strangers who quickly became friends at Iowa State tailgates. His love of the outdoors included the annual Beving fishing trip to Minnesota, hunting, fishing with friends and grandchildren, gardening, and growing roses, trees, and shrubs.
Larry is survived by his wife Bonnie, children Kelly (Darren) Gauck of Gilbert, Iowa and Lance Beving of Urbandale, Iowa; his grandchildren Collin and Adalyn Gauck and Chase Beving. He is also survived by his four sisters Barbara Hildahl of Marshalltown, Iowa; Elizabeth (Dean) Opdycke of Fremont, Indiana; Virginia Dougherty (Dale Harrington) of Asbury, Iowa; and Rita Beving (David Griggs) of Dallas, Texas and by five nieces and nephews. He also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Linda Carr of Eldora, and their four sons and their families. Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ackley Public Library, Iowa Falls Public Library, and Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown.
