Gertrude Josephine Kriegel was born on January 22, 1918, at home in Poweshiek County to Nicholas and Josephine (Roth) Kriegel. She attended Chapel Hill schoolhouse through the eighth grade walking 3 miles to and from school each day. As the last living sibling she was proceeded in death by her parents Nicholas and Josephine; her siblings: Helen, Kathryn, Louise, John, Madeline, Eugene, Charles, Veronica, Josephine, Donald and Janet, as well as her only son Edward and her two husbands Joseph Spickert and Douglas Anderly.

Gertrude married Joseph John Spickert on September 15, 1937, and they made their home in Marshall and Tama Counties. They had only one son, Edward Joseph Spickert born on Sept 1, 1939. Joseph passed away on Sept 11, 1958, leaving her widowed until she was united in marriage to Douglas Anderly on September 4, 1965 at the Binford House in Marshalltown. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until Dougs death on April 11, 1984.

Gertrude was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Forrester, the St. Mary’s sewing group, the senior group and the funeral committee. She worked for Fisher controls in her earlier years as well as helping to run a nursing home in Tama and cleaning homes for others. She loved being a homemaker, mother, grandmother and caretaker. She especially enjoyed spending time with all her family and all the family reunions. Gertrude took pride in all she did and was quite a perfectionist. Gert was a wonderful cook and will be remembered fondly for her large variety of cookies, the best fudge ever and her homemade chicken and noodles. A very giving and caring woman.
