Sally Goodman Kunz

Sally Goodman Kunz passed away to her heavenly home on July 5, 2019 at the Manly Specialty Care Center, Manly, IA.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 410 N Broadway St, Manly, IA 50456 with Father Neil Manternach, celebrant. Her body will be laid to rest in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Manly, IA.

Visitation with a public viewing will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2019 at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly, IA 50456. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

In Sally’s honor, she has requested memorials be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Sally Goodman was born March 29, 1935, the first of twin daughters, to Vince and Rita Goodman in Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating in 1953 from Holy Family High School in Mason City, IA she attended Dubuque School of Nursing and graduated in 1956 with her RN degree. Sally started her career at Surgical Associates in the old Brick and Tile Building in Mason City, IA. She then worked in Waterloo, Marshalltown, Manly Care Center and ended her 44 years of nursing at Mercy Forest Park in Mason City, IA. On August 23, 1958, Sally married Gerald “Jerry” Kunz at Holy Family Catholic Church. Officiating at their ceremony was her uncle, Father Raphael Goodman who had also baptized her. Sally and her husband lived in Marshalltown, IA, for several years and then moved to Manly, IA in 1970. They also lived in Arizona for 15 winters. Sally and Jerry have five children (Steve, Sue, Scott, Sandy, and Stacy).

Sally was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years. She was a CCD teacher, Eucharist Lay Distributor, and a member of her circle. She enjoyed attending school events, volunteering at the VA, golfing (especially at Pioneer Town and Country Club in Manly), and playing cards. However, her greatest joys in life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Surviving her is her loving husband of 60 years, Jerry; their children, Steve (Fiancèe Laurie Mills) Kunz of Mason City, IA, Sue (Brett) Knudson of Rosemount, MN, Scott (Natalie) Kunz of Manly, IA, Sandy (Nick) Karan of Northfield, MN, and Stacy (Jason) Dams of Walford, IA; grandchildren, Amanda and Derek Kunz, Muriel Knudson, Kenny and Kris Kunz, Alex and Will Karan, and Sydney and Payton Dams; great-grandchildren, Tamara, Tiana, Kamden, Ella, QuinnLeigh, William and Kayden; her step-grandchildren, Matthew, Chris, and Brittany Knudson; her brothers-in-law, Bill Hanninen of Danbury, WI, Dr. Lyle “Jack” and wife Margaret Kunz of Orlando, FL, Robert “Bob” Kunz; sister-in-law, Joanne Dailey of Mason City, IA; beloved friends, Barb and Earl Backhaus; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Vince and Rita Goodman; step-mother, Mary Goodman; brother, Joe Goodman; twin sister, Susan Goodman Hanninen; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ed and Iola Kunz; sisters-in-law, Gladys Goodman and Lorraine Kunz; and nieces and nephews, Angela Despenas, Chris Harrison, and Mark Goodman.

Thank you for being a very special part of mom’s life; she spoke many times of the “Special People” in her life … the phone calls, flowers, conversations, meals, cards, laughs, tears and just spending time together. As the years went by, the simple things meant everything to her and you were a very important part of what brought joy to her life. We will all miss her so much, but the memories will keep her with us forever.
