Doris E. Ashing, 83

Doris E. Ashing, 83, of Gilman, passed away peacefully early in the morning of Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook under the care of Hospice Compassus. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to both Westbrook Acres and Hospice Compassus for the excellent service and compassionate care of Doris in her final months.

Per the wishes of Doris and her family, cremation rites have been accorded and a private burial will take place at Dobson Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held Friday, January 22 at 3:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Pastor Terry Collins officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior beginning at 2:00 P.M. For those unable to attend, the service will be available to view on the Mitchell Family Funeral Home Facebook page. Born Doris Elaine Lowry on May 19, 1937 in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Myron and Minnie “Alice” (Rohrs) Lowry. She was the second of five children and grew up in the Garwin area. Over the years, she worked as a Certified Nurses’ Aide for the Marshalltown Hospital, nursing homes and provided in-home patient care. Doris was also employed at Holland Plastics, Polaris, and Walmart. She first worked in the shoe and sewing departments when she lived in Wisconsin before transferring back to the Marshalltown location and becoming a greeter.

Doris was an excellent homemaker, with a big heart and a big family to care for. She loved to crochet and was a skilled baker, especially known for her famous pies. Doris had a green thumb both outside and inside, where she kept many African violets. In her free time, she enjoyed playing Pepper, spending her Friday nights at the Pizza Ranch, going to the casino and watching westerns. Doris was known for her sense of humor and her love of ice cream. She loved her family and enjoyed traveling to visit her kids.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Rick (DebraFrankson) Flathers, Becky (Willie) Wilson and Bucky (Cathy) Flathers; several step-children; many grandchildren and step-grandchildren; multiple great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Kay Lowry and several other relatives.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her siblings: Richard Lowry in infancy, Kenny Lowry, Fred Lowry and Marilyn Wedgewood and several step-children.
